About the Artist:
Michele Simons :"My love for Latino Arts and culture has lead me to study and travel extensively throughout Mexico; especially for the Day of the Dead.
Many years ago after my mother passed away, I visited Mexico for the first time and went to Pátzcuaro and (isla) Janitzio in Michoacán. I was there during the Day of the Dead and I have been passionate about the holiday and the objects associated with it ever since.
I still have the sugar skull that I got in the Pátzcuaro marketplace, to honor my mother. It inspired me to start playing with sugar, even though my only culinary training came from childhood when I watched my Grandmother Virginia create masterpieces out of icing and cake.
This inspiration lead to an art installation at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts last fall (2008). I created nearly fifty sugar skulls commemorating popular figures like Celia Cruz, Frida Kahlo and Pavorotti.
Making and sharing these fantastic little characters is a source of tremendous joy for me, I love to see how they delight people; even those who don't really know very much about the Day of the Dead."
