Michele Simons is a San Francisco resident and artist.

Her interest in Latino Arts and culture has lead her to study and travel extensively throughout Mexico; especially to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

Many years ago, after her mother's passing she visited Mexico for the first time. She went to Pátzcuaro and (isla) Janitzio in Michoacán for Dia de los Muertos and has been passionate about the holiday and the objects associated with it ever since.

Inspired by a sugar skull for her mom from that first Day of the Dead, Michele (who is an acomplished screen-printer) started "playing with sugar". Her only culinary training came from her childhood when she watched her grandmother "create masterpieces out of icing and cake". Nevertheless, this lead to a Day of the Dead installation at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts last fall that featured nearly fifty of Michele's handmade sugar skulls commemorating popular figures like Celia Cruz, Frida Kahlo and Pavorotti.

"Making and sharing these little characters is a source of tremendous joy for me, I love to see how they delight people; even those who don't really know about the celebration of Day of the Dead."
